Ship Design - Fosen Optima™

Fosen Yards has developed its own unique Ro-Ro / Ro-Pax design, called Fosen Optima™. The design is developed by Fosen Yards’ highly skilled in-house engineering department. The vessel is designed in every respect as a modern passenger car/trailer ferry intended for operation on short international trade.

We also wanted to make a ship as flexible as possible, so we can offer the ship with different length, draught, width of superstructure and with three or four cargo decks – and with a various sized superstructure/accommodation.

The hull model test was a part of a research project, Fosen Optima, which aims at developing optimum hull forms for RoRo and RoPax ferries in the speed range 20-25 knots. As part of this research project, Marintek has designed the hull lines and performed CFD calculations.

According to Marintek, comparison of the resistance of this ship with similar ships found in Marintek database shows that this is among the best ships they have ever tested.

The design is optimized with regards to loading capacity and fuel consumption. Two vessels of the Optima design have recently been delivered to Stena (Stena Traveller & Stena Trader).
